Regenerative Finance

World leaders agreed in 2015 to achieve 3 important tasks by 2030 17 Global Goals agreed on:

  1. Ending extreme poverty

  2. Fighting inequality and injustice

  3. Fixing climate change.

We are in the last 10 years to achieve these goals and overcome all global challenges. However, we face a coordination problem where investments and policies are not distributed in the most efficient way possible . We need to adapt as quickly as possible to new global coordination technologies that can overcome current problems .

Decentralized Web3 technologies have the potential to improve coordination in our fight against these problems, as they use local knowledge and actors to guide policies and distribute funds to where they are needed. We need innovative Web3 technologies to redesign the financial infrastructure of the future in innovative and meaningful ways.

As we explained in detail in the previous newsletter, Web3, which uses blockchain to “decentralize” management processes, is at the heart of the restorative finance movement, a new economic paradigm.

Regenerative Finance: ReFi

At its most basic level, ReFi is an idea of evaluation based on the protection and renewal of natural resources rather than their consumption in profit-oriented linear production systems.

Restorative finance is linked to the theory of regenerative economics, which focuses on creating systems that restore and preserve the physical resources necessary for the well-being of the planet.

ReFi is a new financial system that enables communities to thrive and promotes a healthy planet. It aims to change the current economic paradigm in which success is characterized by resource use and growth. It establishes an order in which our economic and ecological systems feed on each other as ‘good’. ReFi values public and planetary good over individual gain.

ReFi’s mission is to systematize incentives to enable restorativeness. To deeply address current crises and design alternatives to our systems with restorative systems that value care and nature. One of the main tools to do this is to redesign money itself by writing a new story, remembering that we are directly connected to the planet.

Redesigning money requires understanding the concepts of token and tokenomics (token + economics) while also considering the 8 important indicators of capital (social, material, financial, living, intellectual, experiential, spiritual and cultural).

The requirements for a restorative economic model to work are as follows:

  1. determine the value of preservation/renovation,

  2. transforming this value into a fungible asset (asset),

  3. creating liquidity for this asset.

ReFi Activity Examples

  • ImpactMarket and Good Dollar implementing poverty reduction mechanisms such as Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) for vulnerable communities, as in.

  • EthicHub improving the livelihoods of unbanked coffee farmers in Chiapas, Mexico, by providing access to capital at low interest rates through

  • Astral Protocol, Curve Labs and Kolektivo activating a local impact economy that supports the regenerative management of urban food forests in Curaçao.

“Web3 for Good” Meetings

We are coming together with the Web3 ecosystem focusing on the ReFi agenda!

‘What kind of work can arise from the combination of Web3 technologies and the impact ecosystem?’ We held our first community meeting, where we looked for the answer to the question, on September 8 at Boğaziçi University Alumni Association (BÜMED).

In the panels at the event, where important names in the Web3 field came together with the social and environmental impact ecosystem; We talked about how Web3 technologies can provide solutions to the needs in the impact ecosystem with sample applications. Short video of the event from here and the whole video from here you can watch!

At the 2nd event of ReFi Turkey Web3 for Good Meetings we met with actors in the Web3 field, especially the blockchain communities of universities, last week.

We were together at the event to grow relationships between student communities, increase acquaintances and build a sustainable ecosystem. We thank everyone who participated, see you at future events!
